Hi Ray,

Should you be looking to purchase your monitors straightaway I’m not sure how useful this information will be to you but I thought I would reply anyway.

A colleague (Ben Motz) and I are currently following up on the work of Wiens et al. (2004) and Wang & Nikolic (2011) to address your concern, which we share, about the decline of CRT production and the Samsung 2233RZ. We are currently testing a variety of 120Hz LCDs/LEDs (Viewsonic, Acer, Samsung etc), 60Hz LCDs and older CRTs for their suitability in vision research. The only concrete result I can provide you with at the moment is that the Viewsonic V3D245 ( http://www.viewsonic.com/products/v3d245.htm ) really does produce 120Hz reliably and appears to produce little motion blur. If you are in no rush, in the near future we should be able to provide you with more detail on a variety of monitors.

Good luck finding a suitable monitor!

                       Call for Participation
The 11th IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality
Nov 5 – 8, 2012, Georgia Tech, Atlanta, USA

http://ismar.vgtc.org/

*************************************************************************

The fields of Mixed Reality (MR) and Augmented Reality (AR) seek to
interactively mix virtual media with a person’s perception of the
physical world around them. Whether interactively combining physical
and virtual objects and environments in 3D, or reacting to location or
other aspects of a users context, these paradigms enable fascinating new
types of user interfaces, and are beginning to show significant impact
on industry and society. The field is highly interdisciplinary, and
MR/AR concepts are applicable to a wide range of applications. Since
1998, ISMAR and its forerunner events, IWAR/ISAR and ISMR, have been the
premier forums in this vital field.

This year we are proud to present the 11th IEEE International Symposium
on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR 2012). The symposium will be held
on Nov. 5 – 8, 2012 at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, USA. We invite you all
to participate in this great event for the exchange of new ideas in this
exciting field!

    * ISMAR 2012 now invites contributions to a range of categories: *

The 2012 ISMAR Arts, Media and Humanities (AMH) program invites artists,
designers, and scholars to explore the potential of Mixed and Augmented
Reality. Artists and designers are invited to present and contextualize
creative work in MR or AR media forms and to reflect on the place of
these technologies in various fields of art and design. Scholars are
invited to present work that analyzes or critiques AR/MR in the contexts
of current social forms or the history of art and media. We welcome
papers, posters, and demos, as well as proposals for panels and workshops.

Topics of interest include Mixed and Augmented Reality works in relation
to, but not limited to:

in the IEEE Xplore digital library. Papers must have a minimum of four
pages and maximum of ten pages, while posters are limited to two pages.

Note, that there is only one category for papers – there is no
distinction between full and short papers. The acceptance for
publication will be partly based on the contribution per page of the
paper. For example, a paper in six pages will be expected to have more
contribution than one with four pages. Material simultaneously submitted
to ISMAR 2012 and another venue will be rejected without review. Please
see the web site at http://ismar.vgtc.org/ for full details.

* Workshops

CfP Special Session on High Performance Computing in Computer Vision Applications (HPC-CVA) – IPTA 2012

http://ipta12.ibisc.univ-evry.fr/

October 15-18, 2012 Instanbul, Turkey

Overview

========

With the growth of Internet and the advances in computer power, computer vision techniques are developing at impressive rates.

Although most of the existing approaches are mainly focused at achieving high accuracy, efficiency is still a major concern of

the whole machine vision community. The development of efficient techniques that perform either on-the-fly or in real-time in

almost all the fields of computer vision from image formation to image coding to image analysis to multimedia processing makes

the design/adoption of high performance solutions a pressing demand. Moreover, the application of high performance computing (HPC)

to computer vision field is straightforward, due to the inherent parallelism of images, as demonstrated by the fact that computer

vision has been one of the most common areas of HPC application.

The main limit to the development of HPC applications to image process- ing/computer vision has been the lack of an acknowledged market.

With the development of emerging technologies such as GPU and multicore CPUs, this is rapidly changing and we expect an exponential increase

in computer vision applications using HPC. In fact, the ability of developing effective computer vision methods that also provide scalable

and efficient processing solutions is becoming more and more an attractive and innovative R&D area for its potential applicability in several

scientific, technological and industrial sectors.

The goal of this special session is two fold. First we aim to present and report on the following topics: High-Performance Computing,

parallel and distributed algorithms/systems, parallel languages, hybrid parallel programming with GPUs and accelerators, Grid, Cluster

and Cloud for computer vision methods. Second, it is aimed at bringing together practitioners and researchers both in computer vision

and in HPC and in multimedia research to share ideas and experiences in designing and implementing HPC solutions for improving efficiency

of computer vision applications, thus promoting interdisciplinary research between computer vision, HPC and multimedia research

Topics of interest

==================

The list of possible topics includes, but is not limited to, the application of High-Performance Computing,

Parallel and Distributed Systems, Multicore programming, Hybrid Parallel Programming with GPUs and Accelerators,

Cluster, Cloud, and Grid Computing in the following fields of computer vision:

* Image Formation, Image Enhancement and Restoration

* Image and Video Analysis

* Image and Video Understanding

* Motion, Tracking and Stereo Vision

Important dates

===============

Regular paper submissions: March 26th 2012

Regular papers notification: May 14th 2012

Final Paper Submission and Registration: June 1st 2012

Date of the conference: October 15-18, 2012

Paper Submission

================

***************************************************************************Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this announcement***************************************************************************
VIGTA 2012 – First International Workshop on Visual Interfaces

  for Ground Truth Collection in Computer Vision Applications Workshop at AVI2012 – Capri, Italy, May 21-25, 2012 http://vigta2012.dieei.unict.it/ Overview ======== The importance of having image/video database containing high quality ground truth annotations generated by humans for a variety of computer vision applications is recognized by the whole machine vision community. Indeed, one of the most significant efforts during the evaluation process is represented by the development of accurate truth and comparing this truth to the decision of image and video processing applications. For example, datasets with ground truth labels are necessary for supervised learning of object categories. However, the cost of providing labelled data, which implies asking a human to examine images and provide labels, becomes impractical as training sets grow. The computer vision community has mainly directed its attention to develop methods for collecting large scale datasets by exploiting the collaborative effort of a large population of annotators. Although there exist functional, task-oriented requirements for tools supporting ground truth labeling, the research still lacks in following human computer interaction paradigm to develop user-oriented tools. In fact, annotators, must be at the centre of such tools since the ground truth needs to be established by humans who, for example, on a video sequence of five minutes captured at 30 fps, have to annotate manually a total of 9000 frames. Therefore, tools for ground truth annotation must be user-oriented, providing advanced visual interfaces able to speed-up the process of ground truth creation by helping users, through the integration of computer vision methods and multi-users ground truth annotations, to finish the task in a reasonable amount of time with less effort. The workshop aims at bringing together practitioners and researchers both in computer vision and in HCI and in multimedia research to share ideas and experiences in designing and implementing visual interfaces for ground truth data generation, thus promoting interdisciplinary research between computer vision, HCI and multimedia research. Topics of interest ================== The list of possible topics includes, but is not limited to: * Adaptive and multimodal interfaces * Comparative analysis of existing tools * Interactive and Collaborative Interfaces * Mobile and Web 2.0 Interfaces * Computer vision methods supporting automatic or semi-automatic machine tagging for ground truth data annotation * Incorporation of Semantic Data in Interfaces * Web Semantic approaches for ground truth representation and sharing * Tools and Applications Important dates =============== * Deadline for paper submission: March 22, 2012. * Notification of acceptance: April 08, 2012 * Camera Ready Paper and Registration: April 15, 2012 * Date of the workshop: May 21, 2012 Submission ========= Submissions to VIGTA 2012 workshop must be original and have not been published or submitted elsewhere.

(Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this
message)=======================================================

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

H-DIBCO 2012 –
Handwritten Document
Image
Binarization Contestin conjunction with the 13th International
Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition (ICFHR’12), September 18-20,
2012, Bari, Italy.

http://utopia.duth.gr/~ipratika/HDIBCO2012/

Document image binarization is an important step
in the document image analysis and recognition pipeline. In this respect, it is
imperative to have a benchmarking dataset along with an objective evaluation
methodology to capture the efficiency of current document image binarization
methodologies. Following the success of DIBCO series (DIBCO 2009 organised in
conjunction with ICDAR’09, H-DIBCO 2010
organized in conjunction with ICFHR 2010 and DIBCO 2011 organised in
conjunction with ICDAR’11) the follow-up of this contest is organised in
conjuction with ICFHR 2012. In H-DIBCO 2012
(Handwritten Document Image Binarization Contest), the general objective is to
record recent advances in handwritten document image binarization using
established evaluation performance measures. The benchmarking dataset that will
be used in the contest will augment the existing dataset of the DIBCO series
containing handwritten document images that are representative of the potential
problems which are challenging in the binarization process.

All researchers in the field of
Document Image Binarization are invited to register and participate in
H-DIBCO 2012. An agreement will be signed by the participants and the organizers
in order to protect the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) of the submitted
software. The description of the methods and the evaluation scores will be
presented during a dedicated ICFHR 2012 session. A report on the competition
will be published in the ICFHR 2012 conference proceedings. At the end of the
competition, the testing dataset along with the required program to run the
evaluation measures will become publicly available.

Note: You may participate in this contest
even if you do not plan to attend the ICFHR 2012 conference.
