in Visual Developmental Neuroscience

We are seeking a Research Associate to work on an exciting new project (funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, BBSRC) to investigate the role of neonatal retinal waves in shaping
functional connectivity in the developing mammalian visual system, both at retinal and central levels.

The general experimental approach consists of chronically silencing the waves during different postnatal periods using pharmacogenetics and investigate the consequences of these early life manipulations on the
structure and function of the mature visual system.

The Research Associate will be in charge of transgenic mouse colonies (with technical support). He/she will be responsible for performing multielectrode array recordings from the retina (in vitro) and the
superior colliculus (in vivo) to investigate light responses and map acuity following wave silencing in early life. He/she will also be in charge of anatomical studies to investigate changes in eye-specific segregation and retino-collicular map precision
and will look at potential changes in various cell markers. Finally, he/she will undertake behavioural studies to look at changes in visual acuity and contrast sensitivity following early life wave silencing.

The ideal candidate will have a background in neuroscience, physics, computer science or mathematics, and a PhD in Neurophysiology or a closely-related discipline. Experience in retinal neurobiology, visual neuroscience
or developmental neuroscience is highly desirable.

He/she should have experience in neurophysiological recordings (in vitro,
in vivo or both) and at least basic experience in neuroanatomical techniques (immunocytochemistry, fluorescence microscopy). Experience in confocal microscopy, programming for data analysis (Matlab, Python, or R) and animal behaviour is highly desirable.

He/she should have good communication skills, demonstrate ability to undertake independent research (including writing research papers), have a solid analytical approach to problem solving and be able to communicate
and write in English.

Finally, the candidate should be willing to co-supervise students and interact with collaborators from other disciplines (computational neuroscience).

The project will take place in the Institute of Neuroscience, at Newcastle University. Dr Evelyne Sernagor, the Principal Investigator, will be in charge of all the
in vitro electrophysiology, neuroanatomy and behavioural experiments. Prof Alex Thiele, the co-Investigator, will be in charge of
in vivo recordings.

Salary: £29,301 – £38,183, depending on previous experience

Closing Date: 30 July 2017

Tenable for 36 months, with a starting date between 1 October 2017 and 1 January 2018
